What is a Dowty Washer?
A Dowty washer, also known as a bonded seal, is comprised of a metallic ring, typically made of stainless steel or other durable metals, paired with an inner rubber ring.
The metallic ring gives the washer its structural strength and rigidity, while the inner rubber ring – usually made of synthetic rubber or FKM Viton – provides the necessary elasticity for the creation of a secure seal. When compressed between two surfaces, the rubber seal deforms and provides a highly effective barrier against fluid or gas leakage.

What are Dowty Washers Made Of?
A Dowty washer or bonded washer consists of two main components – a flat metal ring and an inner sealing ring, each made from different materials chosen for their specific properties.
The outer metal washer ring is commonly made from stainless steel, but it can also be made from other types of metal like zinc-plated mild steel or even brass, depending on the specific requirements of the application. This metallic ring provides the washer with its robust strength and rigidity, ensuring it can withstand the pressures of the assembly in which it’s installed.
The inner sealing ring is typically made from synthetic rubber materials such as nitrile, FKM (fluorocarbon rubber), and Viton, a brand of synthetic rubber and fluoropolymer elastomer that is particularly well-known for its excellent heat resistance and chemical stability. This inner rubber seal element is the component that provides the sealing function of the washer. As previously noted, when pressure is applied, the rubber material deforms to fill any gaps, creating an efficient high-pressure seal that prevents leaks.
